Under Fidel Castro’s rule, the Cuban government has sought to seal itself from outside influences and capitalist values. News is censored. Private enterprise is intensely regulated. All activities are closely monitored by eyes of the Communist Party. While the country has struggled to find its social and economic balance following the Soviet Union’s collapse in 1989, the Cuban people and their culture have persevered. The hum from illicit cockfights in backyard pits echoes through a neighborhood. The smell of a pig roast on a holiday fills the air. And the shuffle of dominoes catches the interest of wandering passersby, young and old. They are prideful and playful, even as the walls around them are crumbling to the ground. _ Reporting from Havana (Cuba)
