For more than 20 years, 58 leprosy-affected families have resided on the grounds of Maryam Church Cemetery in Jima, Ethiopia. They have been forced to call this graveyard home by a society that still stigmatizes those with leprosy. With cracked tombs for neighbors, vultures for pets and gravediggers for landlords, the 400 residents exist as the living dead. The Daughters of Charity, an international community of over 27,000 Catholic women, have sought to change that. Together, with the Maryam Village residents and generous international donors, they have secured new land and new homes for the community. Their next goal — just as simple, just as profound — is water. _ Reporting from Jima (Ethiopia)
