In Ethiopia, the fight against HIV/AIDS is starkly lopsided, with the family unit taking much of the beating. More than 3 million Ethiopians have been infected and 1.1 million children orphaned by the disease. Out of necessity, others in the community — grandparents, neighbors and social welfare organizations — are quietly providing critical support to those whose lives the epidemic has ravaged. The story of Tamru Tilahun, a 30-year-old, HIV-positive widower, and his young daughter Selamawit shows how one family struggles to cope with HIV/AIDS and how one organization, the Urban Development Program (UDP) in Addis Ababa run by the Daughters of Charity, is picking up the pieces of their shattered lives. _ Reporting from Addis Ababa (Ethiopia)
